Vanishing Bees… Mystery Solved?

It doesn’t seem fair to write about the amazing honey bee without mentioning the disturbing trend that has plagued bees in North America and Europe for the past 15 years. Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD) is a syndrome caused by a number of factors — most stemming from monoculture agriculture — that has killed between 30-90% of bees in colonies every year. The case of the disappearing honey bees, on which much of our food depends, is caused by a few factors, but new studies show that CCD is caused in part by what many have suspected all along: a group of pesticides called neonicotinoids, already illegal in France and Germany but still frequently used in the US.

Below is a trailer for the documentary, “Vanishing of the Bees.” Filmed in 2010, it provides a great overview of the beekeeping industry and the causes and effects of Colony Collapse Disorder. Highly recommended for anyone concerned about the fate of our honey bees!
